OSAKA, JAPAN - Sharp Corporation, a major electronics manufacturer, announces the introduction into the Japanese market of a new personal MD (MiniDisc) player. The MD-SS70 is a lightweight pocket-size unit that offers nearly 10 hours of continuous playing time, the industry's longest. The MD-SS70 also uses a "slot-in" mechanism that lets a user insert or eject a disc with a single touch.

	For the first time, a magnesium alloy is being used in a portable MD player for the optical read head housing, reducing its weight by approximately half compared to the zinc alloy used in previous units. The result is lower power consumption required to drive the head and improved reliability.

3)	Thin-profile "slot-in" mechanism to enable quick insertion and ejection of the MD disc
	The MD-SS70 adopts a "slot-in" system that makes is possible to insert and eject the disc with a single touch, eliminating the time and hassle required to open and close a cover or door. In addition, an Auto-Play function starts playback immediately, allowing users to change discs quickly and smartly, even outdoors or in a car.

Demand for MDs (MiniDisc) is growing rapidly, especially among young consumers. Particularly since the end of last year, the percentage of home audio equipment equipped with MD units is increasing. In addition, demand is expected to expand in the future for pocket-size playback-only models designed to be used outdoors away from the home. In addition to adopting the "slot-in" mechanism which is well-suited for outdoor use, the MD-SS70 also offers the extended playback times persistently requested by users. The MD-SS70 is the industry's first portable MD player to use a magnesium alloy for the housing section of the optical read head, reducing its weight by approximately half [12.0 g (0.026 lbs) -> 6.4 g (0.014 lbs)] compared to the zinc alloy used in previous units. The result is a significant reduction in the weight of the optical read head and much lower battery power consumption, as well as improved reliability.

Thin-profile "slot-in" mechanism to enable quick insertion and ejection of the MD disc The MD-SS70 adopts a "slot-in" system that makes is possible to insert and remove the disc with a single touch, eliminating the time and hassle required to open and close a cover or door. Thanks to the development of an ultra-thin spindle motor and a thin-profile drive mechanism, the main body is super compact, only 116.2 (W) x 20.7 (H) x 80.5 (D) mm (4.6" x 0.8" x 3.2"). 1) An Auto-Play function starts playback immediately simply by inserting a disc. This feature is a consequence of the "slot-in" mechanism which is designed with use away from home in mind, such as outdoors or in a car. 2) Using the MD-SS70 in a car, if the engine is shut off, the "Resume Auto-Play" function will resume playback when the engine is turned on again from the start of the musical selection the user had been listening to before the engine was stopped.

Headphone Remote Controller with LCD display lets users conveniently check text information such as song titles or artists' names Operating status, of course, as well as text information (including katakana) can be displayed on the LCD display located on the Remote Controller. Users can conveniently view song titles to make song selections even when the main unit is tucked away in a jacket pocket or inside a briefcase.
